AIF-C01 vs Google Generative AI Leader: Which Non-Technical AI Cert?

By Kyle Tice · Updated October 19, 2026 · Facts checked against official exam pages

Pick the Google Cloud Generative AI Leader if you lead, sell or plan GenAI projects and want the lightest possible exam focused on business strategy. Pick AIF-C01 if you want broader AI literacy, including classic machine learning and security, or if your company is on AWS. Both cost about the same and last three years, so the decision really comes down to which cloud your organisation buys and whether “GenAI only” is enough for your role.

Two different ideas of “foundational”

These two exams are often lumped together as the non-technical AI certs. Their outlines show they are built for different people.

AIF-C01 is an AI practitioner exam. Only about a quarter of it is about generative AI fundamentals. It also tests traditional ML (supervised versus unsupervised learning, the ML lifecycle, metrics), foundation model applications, responsible AI and AWS security controls.

Generative AI Leader is a decision-maker exam. It ignores classic ML almost entirely and spends its time on GenAI concepts, Google’s product line and how to roll GenAI out in a business. Google’s exam guide gives these approximate weights:

Generative AI Leader section Weight
Fundamentals of gen AI ~30%
Google Cloud’s gen AI offerings ~35%
Techniques to improve gen AI model output ~20%
Business strategies for a successful gen AI solution ~15%

Compare AIF-C01:

AIF-C01 domain Weight
Fundamentals of AI and ML 20%
Fundamentals of GenAI 24%
Applications of foundation models 28%
Guidelines for responsible AI 14%
Security, compliance and governance for AI 14%

Two things stand out. First, Google puts 35% on its own products (Gemini, Vertex AI, agent tooling and the enterprise search and agent products). That is product knowledge you will only use if your company buys Google. Second, AWS spends 28% on responsible AI and governance combined, plus IAM and the shared responsibility model. If you work near risk or compliance, AIF-C01 teaches you more you can reuse.

Difficulty

Both rate 2 out of 5 on our scale. Of the two, the Generative AI Leader is the gentler exam.

Google gives you 90 minutes for 50–60 questions. Neither exam requires code.

Cost and validity

As of October 2026:

AIF-C01 Generative AI Leader
Exam fee (US) $100 $99 + tax
Validity 3 years 3 years
Renewal Retake, or pass ML Engineer – Associate Renewal exam in eligibility window
Cost per year About $33 About $33

This is a tie. One small edge to AWS: passing the ML Engineer – Associate also renews AIF-C01, so your renewal can be part of your next step up instead of a repeat. Google’s renewal goes through its own renewal process; check the renewal FAQ when your window opens. Watch /vouchers/ too. Google’s corporate “Get Certified” programmes and AWS promotions have both cut these fees in the past.

Employer recognition

We score AIF-C01 at 4 out of 5 for employer demand and the Generative AI Leader at 3.

AIF-C01 benefits from AWS’s large installed base and from being one of the first cloud AI fundamentals exams, so recruiters know it. The Generative AI Leader is newer and narrower. Inside a Google Cloud customer or partner, though, it carries weight, because partners often need certified staff to meet programme requirements. If you work at a Google partner consultancy, ask your partner team before you choose; the credential may count toward your firm’s status.

For individual job seekers outside those firms, neither cert is a deciding factor. They help most on a LinkedIn profile for roles such as AI product manager, solutions consultant or transformation lead, where the hiring manager wants proof you can talk about AI without hand-waving.

Study effort

A good rule: if terms like “precision and recall” or “overfitting” are new to you, budget the top of the AIF-C01 range.

Who should take both

Take AIF-C01 first. Its wider syllabus covers most of what the Google exam assumes, so the Generative AI Leader then becomes mostly a Google product study, often 10–15 extra hours.

Who should skip both

Engineers. If you write code, start at the associate level, for example the AWS ML Engineer – Associate or a GenAI developer exam. And if your company runs on Azure, look at AI-901 instead; we compare it in AIF-C01 vs AI-901.

FAQ

Is the Google Generative AI Leader technical?

No. Google lists no prerequisites, and the exam focuses on concepts, product choices and business strategy. You will not write code.

Which one is better for a project or product manager?

If your company uses Google Cloud, the Generative AI Leader maps more closely to your job. If it uses AWS, or you are not sure, AIF-C01 gives broader and more reusable knowledge.

Do these certifications expire?

Yes. Both last three years. AWS lets you renew by retaking AIF-C01 or passing the ML Engineer – Associate. Google offers renewal within an eligibility window before expiry.

Can I take either exam online?

Yes. Both offer online proctoring as well as test centres. Our online exam guide covers the setup for Pearson VUE’s OnVUE.
