Claude Architect vs AWS GenAI Developer: CCAR-F or AIP-C01?
By Kyle Tice · Updated October 19, 2026 · Facts checked against official exam pages
Pick the Claude Certified Architect – Foundations (CCAR-F) if you work at a Claude Partner Network organisation and design systems around Claude, Claude Code and MCP. Pick AWS AIP-C01 if you build production GenAI on AWS, or if you are an individual who cannot get into the Claude partner programme, because anyone can book the AWS exam. For many people this is not either/or: Claude runs on Amazon Bedrock, and the two exams cover different layers of the same stack.

The access question comes first
Before comparing syllabuses, check whether you can sit the Claude exam at all. Pearson VUE’s Anthropic page states that “certification is open to organizations in the Claude Partner Network,” and training is also for Partner Network members. As of October 2026 there is no public route for an individual to book CCAR-F.
AIP-C01 has no such restriction. You need an AWS Certification account and $300.
So if you are a freelancer or job seeker outside a partner firm, the decision is made for you. Learn Claude through the free Anthropic Academy courses and take AIP-C01 if you want a proctored credential. Our Claude certification guide tracks any change to eligibility.
Model layer versus platform layer
The two exams look at GenAI from different heights.
CCAR-F is about designing with one model family. Anthropic’s official exam guide (v1.0, July 2026) sets these weights:
| CCAR-F domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Agentic architecture and orchestration | 27% |
| Claude Code configuration and workflows | 20% |
| Prompt engineering and structured output | 20% |
| Tool design and MCP integration | 18% |
| Context management and reliability | 15% |
That is a portable skill set: when to use a workflow versus an agent, how to design tool schemas, how to manage a context window, how to get reliable structured output. The tools, MCP and context domains alone (about 33%) transfer to any modern LLM.
AIP-C01 is about running GenAI on a cloud. Its official domains:
| AIP-C01 domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Foundation model integration, data management and compliance | 31% |
| Implementation and integration | 26% |
| AI safety, security and governance | 20% |
| Operational efficiency and optimization | 12% |
| Testing, validation and troubleshooting | 11% |
Here the questions are about vector stores, Bedrock Knowledge Bases, guardrails, IAM, monitoring, cost and evaluation. The model is one component among many. AWS lists model training and feature engineering as out of scope.
The overlap is real but smaller than you might expect. Both test RAG, agents and prompt design. Only CCAR-F tests Claude Code and MCP in depth. Only AIP-C01 tests infrastructure, compliance and cloud operations.
Difficulty
We rate CCAR-F 3 out of 5 and AIP-C01 4 out of 5.
- CCAR-F: 60 questions in 120 minutes, pass mark 720 out of 1,000. Scenarios describe an agent loop or tool setup and ask what to change. If you use Claude Code daily, much of it will feel familiar.
- AIP-C01: 75 questions (65 scored) in 180 minutes, pass mark 750. AWS recommends 2+ years building production apps and 1 year of hands-on GenAI. The wrong answers are often reasonable designs that cost more or scale worse.
Cost and validity
As of October 2026:
| CCAR-F | AIP-C01 | |
|---|---|---|
| Exam fee | $125 (rose from $99 on June 30, 2026) | $300 |
| Validity | 1 year | 3 years |
| Renewal | Free non-proctored renewal | Retake |
| Cost per year | $125 if you pay full price each year; one-time if free renewal holds | $100 |
Anthropic’s fee and renewal terms are in its Partner Academy certification FAQ; check at checkout, since partner tiers change the price. Partner organisations may also see group discounts. If the free renewal is confirmed for your organisation, CCAR-F becomes the cheaper credential to hold over time.
Pearson’s rules for the Anthropic exams are worth knowing: cancel at least 48 hours ahead or lose the fee, and you can make up to four attempts per exam in a rolling 12 months.
Employer recognition
We score CCAR-F at 3 out of 5 for employer demand and AIP-C01 at 4.
AIP-C01 benefits from AWS’s reach. Recruiters know AWS certifications, and Bedrock is a common enterprise route to GenAI, including to Claude models.
CCAR-F is newer (launched March 2026) and restricted to partners, so few job posts ask for it by name yet. Its value is inside the partner ecosystem: consultancies and systems integrators that sell Claude-based work can show certified staff to clients. For an individual, the credential says “I know how to design with Claude” in a way no cloud certification can.
In both cases, hiring managers will care more about a working agent with evaluation and cost controls than a badge. See what employers want.
Study effort
- CCAR-F: 30–60 hours. The free Anthropic Academy courses (Building with the Claude API, Claude Code in Action, Intro to MCP, MCP Advanced Topics, Agent Skills) are the main prep. The anthropics/courses repo and the Claude Cookbook on GitHub give hands-on practice.
- AIP-C01: 80–120 hours. AWS Skill Builder for official prep, plus hands-on time with Bedrock, Knowledge Bases, Guardrails and agent tooling.
Who should take both
Engineers at AWS and Anthropic partner firms who deliver Claude on Bedrock. That is a common combination, and the two exams complement each other neatly: CCAR-F covers how to design the agent, AIP-C01 covers how to run it safely and cheaply on AWS.
Order: if you already know AWS well, take CCAR-F first, since it is shorter and cheaper. If you know Claude well but not AWS, start with AIP-C01 prep and expect the larger effort there.
Who should skip
If you are not a developer or architect, look at the Claude Certified Associate (also partner-only) or AIF-C01. If you want a vendor-neutral agent credential, the Linux Foundation’s MCP Associate is open to everyone; see our MCP and PyTorch certifications guide.
FAQ
Can I take the Claude Certified Architect exam as an individual?
Not as of October 2026. Pearson VUE says certification is open to organisations in the Claude Partner Network.
Is CCAR-F getting new content?
Pearson lists December 7, 2026 content updates for the Associate, Developer – Foundations and Architect – Professional exams. Architect – Foundations is not on that list.
Does AIP-C01 cover Claude?
AIP-C01 tests Amazon Bedrock and GenAI on AWS in general. Claude models are available in Bedrock, but the exam is not about any one model family.
Which pays off more for a career?
For broad job-market recognition, AIP-C01. For roles at Claude partner firms, CCAR-F can matter more.
