AI Security Certifications in 2026: SecAI+, AAISM, GIAC AI and ISC2
By Kyle Tice · Updated October 19, 2026 · Facts checked against official exam pages
For most security practitioners, CompTIA SecAI+ is the best first AI security certification in 2026. It is vendor-neutral, open to anyone, and spends 40% of the exam on securing AI systems. If you already hold CISM or CISSP and manage a security program, ISACA AAISM is the management-level choice. If you build or attack AI systems for a living and your employer pays for SANS training, the new GIAC GAIPS (defense) and GAIPT (offense) are the most hands-on credentials available. ISC2 has announced an AI security certification but it can’t be booked yet.
Why AI security is its own discipline now
Classic application security still applies to AI apps, but LLMs add attack surfaces that old controls miss:
- Prompt injection, direct and indirect (through retrieved documents, web pages or emails the model reads).
- Tool and agent abuse, where a model with access to tools (often over MCP) gets tricked into taking real actions.
- RAG data leakage, where retrieval surfaces documents a user shouldn’t see.
- Model supply chain risks: poisoned training data, tampered weights, malicious model files.
- Output handling: model output passed unescaped into a shell, SQL query or browser.
Employers want people who can threat-model these and put guardrails and monitoring in place. The certifications below test that knowledge at different depths.

CompTIA SecAI+ (CY0-001)
SecAI+ launched on February 17, 2026. It sits after Security+ in CompTIA’s ladder and is aimed at security analysts and engineers who now have to protect AI systems and use AI in their own work.
Exam: up to 60 questions (multiple choice plus performance-based), 60 minutes, passing score 600 on a 100–900 scale.
Domains, per CompTIA:
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Basic AI concepts related to cybersecurity | 17% |
| Securing AI systems | 40% |
| AI-assisted security | 24% |
| AI governance, risk and compliance | 19% |
Recommended experience: 3–4 years in IT with at least 2 years hands-on in security. CompTIA suggests Security+, CySA+, PenTest+ or equivalent knowledge first, but none is required.
Cost: CompTIA does not list a single USD price on the certification page. Resellers show a list price of about $298 for one voucher, as of October 2026. Check CompTIA’s store before you buy, since prices vary by region.
Validity: three years, renewed through CompTIA continuing education.
Who should take it: SOC analysts, security engineers and cloud security engineers who want an AI credential that HR teams will recognize. It is also the easiest of these to get funded, since many employers already budget for CompTIA.
Skip it if: you are a senior manager (AAISM fits better) or a pentester who wants to prove hands-on skill (GAIPT will say more).
ISACA AAISM
Advanced in AI Security Management is ISACA’s management-level AI security credential. It assumes you already know how to run a security program and tests only the AI layer on top.
Prerequisite: an active CISM or CISSP. That rules it out for most early-career people.
Practice areas: AI governance and program management, AI technologies and controls, and AI risk management.
Exam and cost: 90 questions in 150 minutes. $459 for ISACA members, $599 for non-members, as of October 2026. You get six months from registration to sit the exam.
Who should take it: CISOs, security managers, security architects and GRC leads who hold CISM or CISSP and now own AI risk.
If you are torn between AAISM and the IAPP’s governance credential, see AIGP vs AAISM. Short version: AAISM is for security leaders, and AIGP is for privacy, legal and compliance.
AAIR: the risk-manager option
ISACA also launched Advanced in AI Risk (AAIR) in 2026. It accepts a wider set of prerequisites, including CRISC, CISA, CISM, CGEIT, CDPSE, CISSP, CIA and PMI-RMP. Its practice areas are AI enterprise governance, AI life-cycle risk management and AI risk program management. Price is the same as AAISM. If your role is enterprise or IT risk rather than security operations, AAIR is the better match. The audit sibling, AAIA, is covered in our AI governance guide.
GIAC AI certifications: GAIPS and GAIPT
SANS and GIAC have committed to four AI-focused certifications by the end of 2026. Two matter most for this guide.
GIAC AI Platform Security (GAIPS)
GAIPS validates that you can audit and secure generative AI applications and LLM development pipelines. It is tied to the SANS SEC545 course. GIAC opened general purchase (without the course) on July 28, 2026.
Cost: a certification attempt is reported at $999. Most candidates take it with SEC545, which pushes the total into the thousands. This is an employer-funded certification for nearly everyone who holds it.
Who should take it: security engineers and platform teams responsible for production LLM apps, RAG pipelines and model hosting.
GIAC AI Penetration Tester (GAIPT)
GAIPT is the offensive counterpart, tied to SANS SEC536. GIAC lists its coverage as direct and indirect prompt injection, RAG exploitation, agentic systems, alignment problems, MCP server attacks, API security and AI architectural flaws. It is in presale now and only available bundled with the course. General purchase opens December 15, 2026.
Who should take it: penetration testers and red teamers who are being asked to test LLM features and agents.
GIAC’s other two announced AI credentials are tied to SEC598 (security automation) and SEC535 (offensive AI). Check giac.org for their status.
Skip GIAC if: you are paying yourself. The value is real, but the cost only makes sense with employer funding. A self-funded alternative is SecAI+ plus a public portfolio of red-team findings against your own test apps.
ISC2: an AI security certification is coming
On July 15, 2026, ISC2 announced it is developing a vendor-neutral AI security certification, built through its usual practitioner-led job task analysis. ISC2 says a pilot exam is planned for late 2026. A full launch date, name, prerequisites, domains and price have not been announced, so you cannot plan around it yet. You can volunteer for the job task analysis or pilot at isc2.org/new-ai-certification.
Two things are already in place:
- ISC2 has mapped AI concepts into its existing exams. Its September 2026 guidance says the entry-level CC covers foundational AI concepts across all five domains, and CISSP and CCSP candidates should expect AI content too.
- The ISC2 AI Security Certificate is a set of on-demand courses, not a proctored certification. Don’t confuse the two.
If you are a CISSP holder, it is reasonable to wait for ISC2’s credential. Otherwise, don’t let an unannounced exam stop you from starting SecAI+ or AAISM now.
Which one should you take?
| Your situation | Take |
|---|---|
| Security analyst or engineer, 2+ yrs security | SecAI+ |
| Security manager or CISO with CISM or CISSP | AAISM |
| Risk manager with CRISC | AAIR |
| AppSec or platform engineer, employer pays for SANS | GAIPS |
| Pentester or red teamer, employer pays for SANS | GAIPT (from Dec 15, 2026) |
| CISSP holder, no urgency | Watch for the ISC2 AI cert |
| Developer building agents who wants security depth | MCP Associate plus a guardrails portfolio project |
What to build alongside the certificate
AI security hiring managers are skeptical of certificates alone, because the field moves faster than exam blueprints. A small public project helps a lot:
- A prompt-injection test suite against your own RAG app, including indirect injection through a poisoned document, with before-and-after results once you add mitigations.
- An agent with tool permissions and guardrails: allow-listed tools, human approval for risky actions, output validation, and logs you can audit.
- A threat model for an LLM feature, mapped to the OWASP Top 10 for LLM Applications and MITRE ATLAS.
Our AI portfolio projects guide has detailed outlines. The security roadmap puts the certifications in order.
FAQ
Do I need Security+ before SecAI+?
No. CompTIA recommends Security+-level knowledge and 2+ years in security, but there is no formal prerequisite. If you are new to security, Security+ first will make SecAI+ much easier.
Is AAISM worth it if I already have CISSP?
If your job includes owning AI risk or AI security policy, yes. It is a short add-on (90 questions) that signals you have extended your program to AI. If you are hands-on rather than managing, SecAI+ or GIAC is a better use of the money.
When can I take the ISC2 AI security exam?
Not yet. As of October 2026, ISC2 has announced the credential and is planning a pilot exam, with no public registration or launch date.
Are AI security certifications more valuable than AI governance ones?
They serve different jobs. Security certifications generally pay more overall, and Skillsoft’s research still puts security credentials at the top of salary rankings. Governance credentials are a better fit for privacy, legal and compliance careers. See our AI governance certifications guide.
