Claude Certifications Explained: Claude Certified Architect (CCA-F) and All Four Anthropic Exams
By Kyle Tice · Updated October 19, 2026 · Facts checked against official exam pages
Anthropic offers four proctored Claude certifications: Claude Certified Associate – Foundations (CCAO-F), Claude Certified Developer – Foundations (CCDV-F), Claude Certified Architect – Foundations (CCAR-F, widely called “CCA-F”), and Claude Certified Architect – Professional (CCAR-P). As of October 2026 you can only sit them if you work at an organization in the Claude Partner Network, and you register with a partner email on a recognized company domain. If you’re not at a partner, you can still learn the exact same material for free through Anthropic Academy, and there’s a vendor-neutral exam you can take today (more on that below).
This guide separates what Anthropic states officially from what third-party prep sites report, because a lot of the information online about “Claude certification” is copied from the same few blog posts.
Who can take Claude certification exams
Anthropic launched the Claude Partner Network on March 12, 2026, alongside its first technical credential, the Claude Certified Architect – Foundations. Anthropic’s announcement describes the network as a program for organizations bringing Claude to market, with $100 million committed to partner training, technical support and joint market development. Membership is free, and any organization bringing Claude to market can apply.
The official rules for candidates, from the Anthropic Partner Academy certification FAQ:
- Partner employees only. You need a partner email address on a recognized company domain. Personal email addresses don’t work.
- Age 18 or older.
- Register and pay first, then schedule. You pay by credit card in Anthropic Partner Academy, then book a slot with Pearson VUE, either online proctored (OnVUE) or at a test center.
- English only. Both the exams and the prep content are in English.
- Closed book. Browser translation tools aren’t allowed.
Three of the four exams (Developer – Foundations, Architect – Foundations and Architect – Professional) count toward a partner organization’s standing in the network. The Associate exam does not. That’s why consulting firms push their engineers toward the technical exams first.

Official list prices, as of October 2026, before any partner-tier discount:
| Exam | Code | Price (USD) | Level | Counts toward partner standing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Claude Certified Associate – Foundations | CCAO-F | $99 | Foundational | No |
| Claude Certified Developer – Foundations | CCDV-F | $125 | Associate | Yes |
| Claude Certified Architect – Foundations | CCAR-F (CCA-F) | $125 | Associate | Yes |
| Claude Certified Architect – Professional | CCAR-P | $175 | Professional | Yes |
The Architect – Foundations price went from $99 to $125 for registrations on or after June 30, 2026. Partner tiers change what you actually pay: Registered-tier partners pay full price, while Select, Preferred and Global Premier partners get 50% off, applied at checkout. Global Premier partners get 100% off through December 31, 2026, then 50%. Prices go stale quickly, so check the FAQ before you budget.
Claude Certified Associate – Foundations (CCAO-F)
The entry-level exam, aimed at non-engineering staff: sellers, consultants, delivery managers and others who use Claude in business work. Expect questions on using Claude effectively and safely rather than on the API. If you’re an engineer, skip it and go straight to the Developer or Architect exam, since the Associate doesn’t count toward partner standing.
Claude Certified Developer – Foundations (CCDV-F)
For developers building on the Claude API. Third-party guides describe its scope as the Messages API, tool use, MCP and Claude Code workflows. Anthropic’s exam guide is the authoritative scope document.
Claude Certified Architect – Foundations (CCA-F / CCAR-F)
The flagship, and the one most people mean by “Claude certification” or “Claude Code certification.” Anthropic describes it as “a technical exam for solution architects building production applications with Claude.”
Official format details (Partner Academy FAQ):
- 120 minutes of answering time, about 135 minutes of total seat time including check-in, instructions and a survey
- Multiple-choice and scenario-based multiple-response questions
- Scaled score from 100 to 1,000; 720 is the passing score for all four exams
- Your score report shows an overall scaled score and percentage correct by section
- Results appear on screen; the Credly badge usually follows within minutes for online exams
From the official exam guide (CCAR-F Exam Guide v1.0, July 2026): 60 questions across five weighted domains.
| Domain | Weight |
|---|---|
| Agentic architecture and orchestration | 27% |
| Claude Code configuration and workflows | 20% |
| Prompt engineering and structured output | 20% |
| Tool design and MCP integration | 18% |
| Context management and reliability | 15% |
Anthropic’s exam guide is the authoritative source for scope and includes sample questions, so download it and use its task statements as your checklist. The earlier practice exam has been retired.
Notice how much of that weight sits on Claude Code and agents. This is not a prompt-writing quiz. You’re expected to know how to configure Claude Code for a team (CLAUDE.md files, permissions, hooks, subagents, skills), design tool schemas, and keep long-running agents inside their context budget.
Claude Certified Architect – Professional (CCAR-P)
The advanced architect exam, focused on production Claude systems at scale. There’s no formal prerequisite: you can take Professional without holding Foundations, and Foundations does not upgrade to Professional automatically. If you have production Claude experience, you can go straight to Professional, but most people will find the Foundations material a useful warm-up.
Retake policy, cancellations and validity
These rules are official, from the Pearson VUE Anthropic page and the Partner Academy FAQ:
- Waiting periods after a fail: 14 days after your first attempt, 30 days after your second, 90 days after your third.
- Attempt cap: up to 4 attempts per exam in any rolling 12-month period.
- Retake cost: a retake costs the full exam fee (your partner discount still applies). There’s no free retake.
- Cancel or reschedule: at least 48 hours before your appointment, or you forfeit the fee. Cancelling in Pearson doesn’t trigger a refund on its own; you request it from Anthropic certification support.
- Validity: 12 months from the date you earn it. Earlier 6-month certifications were extended to 12 months.
- Renewal: review what changed since you certified, then complete a free, non-proctored assessment. If you let it lapse, you retake the full exam at full price.
A 12-month validity is short compared with AWS (three years) or Google Cloud (two to three years), which reflects how fast Claude’s products change. Put the renewal date in your calendar.
The December 7, 2026 content refresh
Pearson VUE’s Anthropic page says the Associate – Foundations, Developer – Foundations and Architect – Professional exams include updated content starting December 7, 2026. Updated exam guides are due November 17, 2026. Architect – Foundations is not named in the refresh.
What that means for you:
- Testing before December 7: prepare against the current exam guide.
- Testing on or after December 7: use the updated guide once it’s published on November 17. Don’t rely on older third-party notes for CCAO-F, CCDV-F or CCAR-P.
- Already booked for early December? Compare the two guides when the new one lands and decide whether to move your date. You can reschedule free up to 48 hours before the appointment.
We’ll track the change on the /changelog/.

A 4–6 week plan for CCA-F
Plan on 30–60 hours if you already build with LLM APIs.
- Week 1: API foundations. Building with the Claude API and Claude Platform 101. Work through the API fundamentals and tool-use notebooks in the anthropics/courses repo. Practice structured output with JSON schemas.
- Week 2: Tools and MCP. Introduction to Model Context Protocol, then build one MCP server of your own (a database lookup or internal API wrapper is enough). Read the tool-use recipes in the Claude Cookbook.
- Week 3: Claude Code. Claude Code 101 and Claude Code in Action. Set up a real repo with a CLAUDE.md, permission rules, a hook and a custom slash command.
- Week 4: Agents and context. Introduction to subagents and Introduction to agent skills. Build a multi-step agent and deliberately push it past its context window so you see what fails and how compaction, summarization and retrieval help.
- Weeks 5–6: Exam guide pass. Go through the official exam guide line by line, do its sample questions, and fill gaps.
Claude Code skills you should actually know
Because Claude Code is 20% of the exam, hands-on time matters more than reading. Make sure you can:
- Write a project CLAUDE.md that sets conventions without bloating context
- Configure permissions (allow and deny rules) for a team repository
- Write hooks that run before or after tool calls, for example to block edits to protected files or run a formatter
- Create an Agent Skill: a folder with a SKILL.md file that Claude loads when relevant (see the Claude Code skills docs)
- Define subagents for focused tasks like review or test writing, and explain when a subagent is better than a long single conversation
- Connect MCP servers to Claude Code and scope what they can do
- Run Claude Code non-interactively in CI
Paid practice tests
There’s no official practice exam right now. Some course marketplaces sell Claude certification practice tests. Quality varies, and some are written from the same unofficial domain list above. If you buy one, use it for timing practice, not as a source of truth, and never use sites that claim to share real exam questions.
What to do if you’re not at a Claude partner
This is most readers. You have four realistic options:
- Ask your employer to join. If your company resells, implements or builds on Claude for clients, it can apply to the Claude Partner Network for free. That’s the only route to the proctored exams.
- Take the free Anthropic Academy courses anyway. You get completion certificates you can add to LinkedIn, and you’ll be ready if you later join a partner. See the Anthropic Academy entry.
- Take the vendor-neutral MCP exam. The Linux Foundation’s Model Context Protocol Associate (MCPA) is open to anyone, costs $250 as of October 2026, and covers the tools and MCP material that overlaps heavily with CCA-F. Details are in our MCP and PyTorch certification guide.
- Get a cloud cert that includes Claude. Claude is available on Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud Vertex AI. The AWS Certified Generative AI Developer – Professional covers Bedrock-based GenAI systems and is open to everyone. Our comparison of Claude Architect vs AWS GenAI Developer breaks down the overlap.
Honestly, if you’re not at a partner, a public GitHub repo with a working Claude agent, an MCP server and a tidy Claude Code configuration will do more for you in interviews than any certificate. Hiring managers can open it and judge it in five minutes. See AI portfolio projects for ideas.
Who should skip Claude certification
- You’re not at a partner and can’t get there. You literally can’t sit it. Spend the time on a portfolio and MCPA.
- Your team uses several model vendors. A 12-month, single-vendor credential is a weaker signal than a cloud or vendor-neutral cert. See AI-lab vs cloud vs open-source certifications.
- You need a credential for HR filters in regulated industries. Cloud certs and governance certs like the IAPP AIGP are better known to recruiters today.
Where it clearly pays off: consultants and engineers at partner firms, where the certification counts toward the firm’s standing and is often fully or partly paid for.
FAQ
Is there an official Claude Code certification?
Not as a separate exam. Claude Code is covered inside the Developer and Architect exams, and it’s 20% of CCA-F according to the official exam guide. Anthropic Academy offers free “Claude Code 101” and “Claude Code in Action” courses with completion certificates.
How much does the Claude Certified Architect exam cost?
As of October 2026, Architect – Foundations is $125 and Architect – Professional is $175, before partner discounts. Select, Preferred and Global Premier partners get 50% off; Global Premier partners get 100% off through December 31, 2026.
Can I take a Claude certification without working at a partner company?
No. Registration requires a partner email address on a recognized company domain at a Claude Partner Network organization. Your company can apply to the network for free.
How long is a Claude certification valid?
12 months. On-time renewal is free and uses a non-proctored assessment. If it lapses, you retake the full exam at full price.
