NVIDIA NCA-GENL vs Databricks GenAI Engineer: Which LLM Cert First?
By Kyle Tice · Updated October 19, 2026 · Facts checked against official exam pages
Pick NVIDIA’s NCA-GENL if you want to prove you understand how LLMs work, from transformers to fine-tuning and evaluation, without tying yourself to one data platform. Pick the Databricks Generative AI Engineer Associate if your company runs on Databricks and you build RAG apps there, because it is the more job-specific credential and scores higher on employer demand. NCA-GENL is cheaper and shorter; Databricks is closer to what you do at work.

Concepts versus platform
Both are associate-level LLM exams. Their weightings show they test different things.
NVIDIA NCA-GENL topics:
| Topic | Weight |
|---|---|
| Core machine learning and AI knowledge | 30% |
| Software development | 24% |
| Experimentation | 22% |
| Data analysis | 14% |
| Trustworthy AI | 10% |
Databricks Generative AI Engineer Associate sections:
| Section | Weight |
|---|---|
| Application development | 30% |
| Assembling and deploying apps | 22% |
| Design applications | 14% |
| Data preparation | 14% |
| Evaluation and monitoring | 12% |
| Governance | 8% |
NVIDIA’s exam reads like an ML course syllabus. Almost a third is core ML and AI knowledge, and another 22% is experimentation: comparing models, prompts and fine-tuning runs. NVIDIA tooling appears, but the questions are mostly about concepts that apply on any stack.
Databricks’ exam reads like a job description. More than half (52%) is building and deploying applications: chunking and embedding documents, Vector Search, chains and agents, model serving. Governance through Unity Catalog and evaluation with Databricks tooling make up the rest. Almost every question assumes the Databricks way of doing it.
That split points to a simple rule. If you need to learn LLMs, NCA-GENL’s syllabus teaches you more. If you already understand LLMs and need to ship them on Databricks, its exam validates the skill you use.
Difficulty
We rate both 3 out of 5.
- NCA-GENL: 50–60 questions in one hour. That is a fast pace, about a minute per question. NVIDIA’s only stated prerequisite is a basic understanding of generative AI and LLMs, but the core ML section rewards people who have studied the theory: attention, tokenisation, loss functions, evaluation metrics.
- Databricks: 45 scored questions in 90 minutes, so you have double the time per question. Databricks recommends at least six months of hands-on work with the tasks in the exam guide. Without real experience on the platform, product-specific questions are the main hurdle.
Data scientists with a theory background usually find NVIDIA easier. Data engineers who live in Databricks notebooks usually find Databricks easier.
Cost and validity
As of October 2026:
| NCA-GENL | Databricks GenAI Engineer | |
|---|---|---|
| Exam fee | $125 | $200 |
| Validity | 2 years | 2 years |
| Renewal | Retake | Retake current exam |
| Cost per year | $62.50 | $100 |
NVIDIA is cheaper by $75 per attempt. Databricks narrows the gap with discounts: its quarterly Learning Festival has offered 50% vouchers to people who finish self-paced courses, which brings the exam to $100. Check /vouchers/ for the current status.
Both expire after two years, and both renew only by retaking the current exam. For Databricks, that matters: the platform changes quickly, so the renewal exam may look quite different from the one you passed.
Employer recognition
We rate Databricks 4 out of 5 for employer demand and NCA-GENL 3.
Databricks is widely used by enterprise data teams, and companies that run it want people who can build GenAI on top of their existing lakehouse and governance. The certification maps straight onto that work.
NCA-GENL’s value is as a signal of understanding. NVIDIA’s name carries weight in AI, and the exam’s concept focus tells a hiring manager you know what is happening inside the model. It is a good fit for a CV aimed at ML engineer or applied scientist roles, or anywhere NVIDIA’s inference stack (NIM, NeMo, TensorRT-LLM) is in use.
Neither is enough on its own for a GenAI engineering job. A deployed RAG app with an evaluation set will carry more weight in an interview. See what employers want.
Study effort
- NCA-GENL: 30–50 hours. NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Institute offers courses aligned to the exam, including Rapid Application Development with LLMs. Fill theory gaps with free material such as Andrej Karpathy’s Zero to Hero series or Hugging Face Learn.
- Databricks: 40–60 hours. Databricks Academy’s self-paced GenAI engineering courses are free and match the exam guide closely. Use a workspace to build a full RAG pipeline with Vector Search and model serving before booking.

Who should take both
This pair works well in sequence. Take NCA-GENL first to cement the theory, then Databricks to prove you can apply it in production. That order suits:
- Data scientists moving into GenAI engineering at a Databricks company.
- ML engineers who want both a conceptual and a platform credential for about $325 total.
The overlap is moderate. RAG, prompt engineering and evaluation appear in both, so the second exam usually takes less time than the first.
Who should skip
- If you do not use Databricks and do not plan to, skip its exam. Its value is tied to the platform.
- If you already hold a professional GenAI cert such as AWS AIP-C01, NCA-GENL adds little. Consider NVIDIA’s professional NCP-GENL instead if you want an NVIDIA credential.
FAQ
Is NCA-GENL vendor-neutral?
Mostly. NVIDIA tooling appears, but the weighted topics are core ML, software development, experimentation, data analysis and trustworthy AI, which apply on any stack.
Do I need Databricks experience for the GenAI Engineer exam?
There is no formal prerequisite, but Databricks recommends six months of hands-on work. The questions assume you know its tools.
Which is cheaper over time?
NCA-GENL: $125 every two years, about $62.50 a year. Databricks costs $200 every two years unless you use a festival voucher.
Is there a newer Databricks agent cert?
Yes. The Databricks Context Engineer Associate launched in 2026 and covers agent context, retrieval, memory and MCP.
