NVIDIA AI Certification Study Guide 2026: NCA-GENL to NCP-AAI
By Kyle Tice · Updated October 19, 2026 · Facts checked against official exam pages
Start with NCA-GENL (Generative AI LLMs, Associate). It’s the most general NVIDIA AI exam and the best foundation for everything else. After that, pick by role: NCA-GENM if you work with images, video or audio; NCA-AIIO if you run GPU infrastructure; NCP-GENL if you train and optimize LLMs; NCP-AAI if you build agents.
NVIDIA certs are less tied to one cloud than AWS, Microsoft or Google exams. They test LLM concepts plus NVIDIA’s tooling (NeMo, NIM, TensorRT-LLM, Triton). This guide covers the order, official topic weights, NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute (DLI) courses, study plans and labs.

Recommended paths
- LLM developer: NCA-GENL, then NCP-GENL.
- Agent builder: NCA-GENL, then NCP-AAI.
- Multimodal or creative AI: NCA-GENL, then NCA-GENM.
- Infrastructure, DevOps or data center: NCA-AIIO, then the professional infrastructure exams (NCP-AII at $400 or NCP-AIO at $500).
Who should skip: If you already hold a cloud GenAI developer cert and don’t use NVIDIA’s software stack, NCA-GENL mostly re-tests concepts you know. And if you’re job hunting for application-level AI engineering roles, a deployed RAG or agent project will usually matter more than any of these.
Rules worth knowing before you book
NVIDIA’s certification page says exams are pass/fail with no score reported, you wait 14 days after a failed attempt, and you can take an exam no more than five times in 12 months. Because you get no score, your practice scores are the only signal you’ll have about how close you were.

NVIDIA DLI courses, free first
The NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute runs both self-paced and instructor-led courses. Several are free; others cost money. Prices below are from NVIDIA’s exam pages as of October 2026.
Free or low cost
- Fundamentals of Deep Learning: NVIDIA recommends its open-source course materials for NCA-GENL and NCA-GENM.
- AI Infrastructure and Operations Fundamentals: self-paced, about seven hours, for NCA-AIIO.
- Exam study guides and practice questions on each certification page.
- NVIDIA DLI also lists free self-paced courses in its catalog; check the training page for current ones.
Paid DLI courses recommended on the exam pages
| Course | Format | Price | Recommended for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rapid Application Development With LLMs | DLI | see DLI catalog | NCA-GENL |
| Building RAG Agents With LLMs | Self-paced, 8 hours | $90 | NCP-GENL, NCP-AAI |
| Building Agentic AI Applications With LLMs | Self-paced, 8 hours | $90 | NCP-AAI |
| Evaluating RAG and Semantic Search Systems | Self-paced, 3 hours | $30 | NCP-AAI |
| Optimizing CUDA ML Codes With Nsight Profiling Tools | Self-paced, 4 hours | $30 | NCP-GENL |
| Adding New Knowledge to LLMs | Instructor-led, 8 hours | $500 | NCP-GENL, NCP-AAI |
| Model Parallelism: Building and Deploying Large Neural Networks | Instructor-led, 8 hours | $500 | NCP-GENL |
The self-paced courses give you a hosted GPU environment, which is the main reason to pay for them: you get hands-on time with NVIDIA tooling without renting GPUs. The $500 instructor-led courses are worth it mainly if your employer pays.
Other free and paid resources
- Free: Hugging Face Learn (LLM and agents courses), Andrej Karpathy’s Zero to Hero series for transformer internals, DeepLearning.AI short courses, and Sebastian Raschka’s writing on LLM fine-tuning.
- Books: Build a Large Language Model From Scratch (Raschka) and Hands-On Large Language Models (Alammar and Grootendorst) fit NCA-GENL well. AI Engineering (Chip Huyen) fits NCP-AAI.
- Practice tests: NVIDIA’s official practice material is limited, so many candidates use third-party sets on Udemy. Quality varies. Prefer sets that explain every answer and were updated recently. Search NCA-GENL practice tests on Udemy.
- Structured courses: Coursera hosts NVIDIA-related and general LLM courses if you prefer graded lessons. Search NVIDIA courses on Coursera.
Practice-exam strategy
- Because NVIDIA reports only pass/fail, build your own score signal. Keep a spreadsheet of practice results by topic.
- Aim higher than you think you need. Without a score report, you can’t tell if you failed by one question or twenty. Target 85% or more on fresh practice questions before booking.
- The associate exams are fast. 50–60 questions in an hour is about a minute each. Practice under time.
- Treat third-party practice sets with care. Some are outdated or wrong. Cross-check surprising answers against NVIDIA docs.
- Never use dumps. They break NVIDIA’s exam terms.
Hands-on labs to do
NCA-GENL
- Fine-tune a small open model with LoRA on a free Colab or Kaggle GPU and compare it with the base model on 20 test prompts.
- Build a minimal RAG app: embed documents, store vectors, retrieve, generate with citations.
- Call an NVIDIA NIM endpoint from the NVIDIA API catalog and compare outputs across two models.
NCP-GENL
- Quantize a model to 4-bit and measure the memory, latency and quality change.
- Profile an inference run and find the bottleneck.
- Serve a model with batching and measure throughput at different batch sizes.
NCP-AAI
- Build an agent with three tools, short-term memory and a retry policy for failed tool calls.
- Write a trajectory evaluation that checks whether the agent called the right tools in the right order.
- Add guardrails and a human approval step for one risky action.
These make good portfolio projects; see /guides/ai-portfolio-projects/.

FAQ
Is NCA-GENL hard?
It’s an associate exam with a short time limit. People with ML basics usually find it moderate. People who only know prompt engineering often struggle with the experimentation and data analysis topics, which together are 36% of the exam.
Do NVIDIA certs require using NVIDIA hardware?
No. The associate exams are mostly conceptual. You can do all the labs above on free cloud notebooks. The professional exams assume familiarity with NVIDIA’s software stack, which the DLI courses provide in hosted environments.
Should I take NCP-GENL or NCP-AAI?
NCP-GENL if your work is training, fine-tuning or serving models. NCP-AAI if you build applications that use models as components. Most application developers will find NCP-AAI more relevant.
How long are NVIDIA certifications valid?
Two years. NCA-GENL recertification is by retaking the exam.
Can I retake right away if I fail?
No. NVIDIA requires a 14-day wait and allows at most five attempts in 12 months.
