Databricks GenAI Certification Study Guide 2026: GenAI Engineer and Context Engineer
By Kyle Tice · Updated October 19, 2026 · Facts checked against official exam pages
If you build LLM apps on Databricks, take the Generative AI Engineer Associate first. Add the Context Engineer Associate, new in 2026, if you build agents and care about retrieval, memory and context windows. If your work is classic ML (training, MLflow, model serving), take the Machine Learning Associate, then the Machine Learning Professional. Before any of them, the free Generative AI Fundamentals and AI Agent Fundamentals accreditations are an easy warm-up.
Every Databricks associate and professional exam costs $200. The quarterly Learning Festival has offered 50% off vouchers, so timing matters. This guide covers order, official weights, study plans, free training and labs.
What changed in 2026
- The Context Engineer Associate is new. Its exam guide covers the version available from July 29, 2026. It’s the first certification we know of that’s built entirely around context engineering: system prompts, retrieval, memory with Lakebase and MLflow, MCP tools, compaction and multi-agent context.
- The Databricks product stack changed names and features. Current exam guides reference Agent Bricks, Databricks AI Search, Lakebase, Genie and MLflow 3. Older courses that only cover “Vector Search” and “Mosaic AI Agent Framework” are partly out of date.
- Three Learning Festivals ran in 2026 with 50% certification vouchers (January, March–April and June–July, per Databricks community posts). We haven’t seen a post-July festival announced as of October 2026.

Recommended paths
- GenAI app developer: free accreditations, then GenAI Engineer Associate, then Context Engineer Associate.
- ML engineer: ML Associate, then ML Professional. Add GenAI Engineer if your team is shipping LLM features.
- Data engineer moving into AI: GenAI Engineer Associate. Your Unity Catalog and pipeline experience transfers directly.
Who should skip: If your company doesn’t use Databricks, these certs carry less weight than a cloud provider cert or a portfolio. The free accreditations are fine to collect, but don’t list them as if they were proctored certifications.
Generative AI Engineer Associate
Exam outline (official)
| Section | Weight |
|---|---|
| 1. Design Applications | 14% |
| 2. Data Preparation | 14% |
| 3. Application Development | 30% |
| 4. Assembling and Deploying Apps | 22% |
| 5. Governance | 8% |
| 6. Evaluation and Monitoring | 12% |
Application Development and Assembling and Deploying together make up more than half the exam. Expect questions on chunking strategy, choosing embedding models, building retrieval chains and agents, tool use, registering models with MLflow and Unity Catalog, model serving endpoints, guardrails, and evaluating quality with MLflow.
6-week plan (about 40–60 hours)
- Week 1: Design and data prep. Breaking a business problem into LLM tasks, prompt design, document parsing, chunking, cleaning, Delta tables for source docs.
- Weeks 2–3: Application development. Building RAG with Databricks AI Search, agent tools, structured output, choosing models from the Foundation Model APIs, LangChain or LangGraph on Databricks.
- Week 4: Assembling and deploying. MLflow model logging, Unity Catalog model registration, model serving, Agent Bricks, batch inference.
- Week 5: Governance, evaluation and monitoring. Unity Catalog permissions, PII handling, guardrails, MLflow evaluation, inference tables and monitoring.
- Week 6: Practice questions and labs you skipped.
Context Engineer Associate
Exam outline (official, version from July 29, 2026)
| Section | Weight |
|---|---|
| 1. Foundations of Context Engineering | 16% |
| 2. System Prompt and Instruction Design | 9% |
| 3. Knowledge Retrieval and Genie Configuration | 20% |
| 4. Memory Architecture with Lakebase and MLflow | 18% |
| 5. Tool Design, MCP, and Agent Context | 13% |
| 6. Context Compression and Compaction | 11% |
| 7. Multi-Agent and Long-Horizon Task Design | 13% |
This exam is scenario-heavy. The guide’s objectives start with phrases like “given an agent trace” or “given MLflow 3 experiment results”, so you’re diagnosing problems, not reciting features. Topics include context failure modes (poisoning, distraction, confusion, clash), Genie space configuration, chunking, pre-inference vs. just-in-time retrieval, Lakebase-backed agent memory, progressive disclosure of MCP tools, Agent Skills, compaction prompts and context propagation between sub-agents.
6-week plan (about 40–60 hours)
- Week 1: Foundations. Read about context windows, attention budget and why long contexts degrade. Learn the four context failure modes by name and example.
- Week 2: Prompts and Genie. Write system prompts, choose few-shot examples under a token budget, configure a Genie space with instructions and trusted SQL.
- Week 3: Retrieval. Databricks AI Search index types and sync modes, chunking strategies, Unity Catalog metadata quality and its effect on retrieval.
- Week 4: Memory. Lakebase as a durable store, LangGraph checkpointers, when to use session vs. long-term memory, MLflow 3 for comparing runs.
- Week 5: Tools, compaction and multi-agent design. MCP tool descriptions, progressive disclosure, compaction prompt tuning, sub-agent context design.
- Week 6: Work through the official sample questions in the exam guide, then review weak sections.
Machine Learning Associate and Professional
ML Associate (official outline): Databricks Machine Learning 38%, Model Development 31%, ML Workflows 19%, Model Deployment 12%. 48 scored questions in 90 minutes.
ML Professional (official outline): Model Development 44%, ML Ops 44%, Model Deployment 12%. 59 scored questions in 120 minutes.
Plan: four weeks for the Associate (AutoML, Feature Engineering in Unity Catalog, MLflow tracking, Spark ML basics, hyperparameter tuning) and six to eight weeks for the Professional (MLflow model lifecycle, Unity Catalog model registry, model serving, monitoring, drift, CI/CD for ML). Take the Associate first unless you already run production ML on Databricks.
Free resources first
- Free accreditations. Generative AI Fundamentals (short videos plus a quiz), AI Agent Fundamentals and Databricks Fundamentals each earn a badge. They take about one to one and a half hours each.
- Databricks Academy self-paced courses. The Context Engineer exam guide lists the recommended ones: Generative AI Engineering with Databricks (Building RAG Agents with Agent Bricks, Building Agentic Applications on Databricks, Agent Evaluation on Databricks, Deploying and Monitoring Agent Applications, Building Reliable Conversational Agents with Genie) plus data governance courses. Databricks also lists free role-based pathways for data engineers, ML engineers and analysts.
- Databricks Free Edition for hands-on practice without a paid workspace.
- Exam guides. Each includes sample questions with answers. Do them last as a readiness check.
- Databricks documentation for Agent Bricks, AI Search, Lakebase, Genie and MLflow 3.
Learning Festival discounts
Databricks runs a Learning Festival several times a year. Based on Databricks community event posts, the 2026 festivals ran January 9–30, March 16–April 3, and June 15–July 6 (an “Advanced” festival). Completing at least one listed learning pathway during the window earned a 50% off certification voucher, with an expiry date attached.
What to know:
- You need to finish all modules in a pathway within the window, not just start it.
- Some participants on the community forum reported vouchers arriving late or not at all, and Databricks staff asked them to contact the academy for help. Screenshot your completion.
- Vouchers expire. Plan your exam date before you start the festival.
At $200 per exam, 50% off saves $100. If you’re not in a hurry, wait for the next festival. Check /vouchers/ for current offers.
Paid resources
- Practice tests. Third-party sets on Udemy are the most common paid prep. Pick ones updated in 2026 that mention Agent Bricks, AI Search or MLflow 3. Search Databricks GenAI Engineer practice tests on Udemy.
- Structured courses. Coursera hosts Databricks courses on LLMs and data engineering. See Databricks courses on Coursera.
- Instructor-led Databricks training is available but expensive. It’s mainly worth it if your employer pays.
Practice-exam strategy
- Do the official sample questions last, not first. They’re the best readiness signal you have.
- Watch for “most cost-effective” and “least maintenance”. Databricks scenarios often have two technically correct answers; the right one is the managed option with the smallest change.
- For Context Engineer, practice reading traces. Many objectives give you an agent trace or MLflow result and ask what went wrong. Build an agent, break it on purpose, and read the traces.
- Check the exam guide version. Databricks updates exam guides and lists the date each version takes effect. Study the one that will be live on your exam day.
- No dumps. They violate Databricks’ certification terms.
Hands-on labs to do
All of these work on Databricks Free Edition or a trial workspace.
GenAI Engineer
- Parse and chunk a set of PDFs into a Delta table, build an AI Search index, and answer questions with citations.
- Build a tool-calling agent, log it with MLflow, register it in Unity Catalog and deploy it to a serving endpoint.
- Create an evaluation set of 25 questions and run MLflow evaluation before and after a prompt change.
Context Engineer
- Build a Genie space for a small dataset with instructions, sample questions and trusted SQL, then test it with domain jargon.
- Add Lakebase-backed memory to a LangGraph agent so a conversation survives a restart.
- Give an agent 30 MCP tools, measure token use, then apply progressive disclosure and measure again.
- Run a long task until context fills, add a compaction step, and check what the summary lost.
ML Associate and Professional
- Train with AutoML, then reproduce the best run by hand with MLflow tracking.
- Register, serve and monitor a model, and set up a retraining job.
These projects also work as portfolio pieces. See /guides/ai-portfolio-projects/.

FAQ
Should I take GenAI Engineer or Context Engineer first?
GenAI Engineer. It covers the full app lifecycle (design, data, development, deployment, governance, evaluation). Context Engineer goes deeper on one part of that and assumes you already know how to build and deploy an agent on Databricks.
Are the free accreditations real certifications?
No. They’re short courses with a quiz and a badge. They’re useful for learning the platform and for showing interest, but list them separately from proctored certifications on your résumé.
How do I renew a Databricks certification?
Certifications are valid for two years. To recertify, you take the full current version of the exam. Databricks offers a separate renewal exam for some certs, such as the Data Engineer Associate.
When is the next Learning Festival?
Databricks hasn’t announced one after July 2026 as of October 2026. Past festivals were spaced a few months apart. Watch the Databricks Community events board and /vouchers/.
Do I need to know Spark for the GenAI exams?
Basic PySpark and SQL help for data prep questions, but the GenAI and Context Engineer exams focus on LLM apps, retrieval, agents and governance rather than Spark internals.
