Free AI Certifications in 2026: What's Actually Free (and What Each Is Worth)
By Kyle Tice · Updated October 19, 2026 · Facts checked against official exam pages
Only a handful of AI certifications are free and proctored. The main ones in October 2026 are Oracle’s two Foundations exams (AI Foundations and Agentic AI Foundations). Almost everything else labeled “free AI certification” is a course completion certificate, which proves you finished a course, not that you passed a supervised exam. The third category is a free or discounted voucher for a paid exam, which comes and goes with promotions.
All three can be worth your time, but they are worth very different amounts on a resume. This guide sorts them out. For the live list we keep updated, see free AI certifications, and for current discount codes, see vouchers.
The three kinds of “free”
| Type | What you get | Proctored? | Resume weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free proctored exam | A real certification, identity-checked | Yes | Medium |
| Free course certificate or badge | Proof of completion | No | Low on its own, higher with a project |
| Free or discounted voucher | A paid cert at reduced or zero cost | Yes | Same as the paid cert |
Here’s why this matters. Recruiters and HR systems treat “certified” differently from “completed a course.” A proctored exam means someone checked your ID and watched you take it. A course certificate means you clicked through the modules and passed a quiz you could usually retake. Neither is useless, but list them under different headings on your resume: “Certifications” for proctored exams and “Training” for course certificates.
Free proctored exams
Oracle OCI AI Foundations Associate (1Z0-1122-26)
The OCI AI Foundations Associate covers AI, ML and generative AI basics plus Oracle’s AI services. Oracle University says its Foundations certifications are free, and the 2026 version of this exam replaced the 2025 one. Oracle MyLearn has a free learning path for it.
What it’s worth: It’s a real proctored credential at zero cost, which makes it a good first line on a career switcher’s resume. Employer demand is low, because few job postings ask for Oracle AI specifically. Treat it as proof of baseline literacy, not a hiring signal.
Oracle Agentic AI Foundations Associate (1Z0-1157-26)
The Agentic AI Foundations Associate is a 40-question, 60-minute exam with a 65% pass mark. It covers agent concepts, agentic patterns and Oracle’s agent tooling, and Oracle offers a free practice exam.
What it’s worth: It’s one of the few free proctored credentials with “agentic” in the name, which recruiters searching for agent skills may pick up. The content is introductory.
Gemini Certified Educator
Google’s Gemini Certified Educator is a free multiple-choice certification for teachers on using Gemini in the classroom, with student variants. We couldn’t confirm its 2026 validity period or whether any fee now applies, so check before you plan around it.
What it’s worth: It’s useful if you work in education and close to irrelevant outside it.
Free course certificates and badges
These are where most of the real learning is. None are proctored certifications, but several teach exactly the skills employers test.
Best for developers
- Anthropic Academy: free courses with completion certificates, including Claude Code in Action, Building with the Claude API, Intro to MCP, MCP Advanced Topics, Agent Skills and the AI Fluency series. It’s also the prep path for Anthropic’s partner-only exams. See the Claude certification guide.
- Hugging Face AI Agents Course: hands-on work with smolagents, LangGraph and LlamaIndex. Completing Unit 1 earns a fundamentals certificate. Unit 1 plus one use-case assignment and the final challenge earns the full certificate of completion. It’s free with no deadline.
- Hugging Face MCP Course: teaches you to build MCP servers and clients, which is good prep for the paid MCPA exam.
Best for foundations
- CS50’s Introduction to AI with Python: Harvard’s free course on search, optimization, ML and neural networks, with real problem sets. The free CS50 certificate carries more weight than most course certificates because the problem sets are hard. An edX verified certificate costs extra.
- Kaggle Learn: short courses on Python, ML, deep learning and feature engineering in notebooks, plus Google’s self-paced 5-Day AI Agents Intensive.
- DeepLearning.AI short courses: about 90 minutes each and free to audit. Certificates for the longer Professional Certificates need a paid Pro membership, so the learning is free and the credential isn’t.
Vendor badges
- OpenAI Academy: free quizzes (80% to pass) that award badges, plus pathway certificates. OpenAI itself says these are not certifications. Its formal certified credentials are invite-only for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces.
- Databricks Generative AI Fundamentals: a free video course and quiz. It takes 2–4 hours and is useful as a primer before the paid GenAI Engineer Associate.
What course certificates are worth
On their own, very little to a hiring manager. Paired with a project, quite a lot. The Hugging Face Agents Course final challenge, or a CS50 final project pushed to GitHub, is something you can show in an interview. A badge from a 60-minute video isn’t. If you take one of these, link the project, not just the certificate. See AI portfolio projects.
Not free: Google AI Essentials is often listed as free, but the certificate requires Coursera’s paid subscription. Check whether Coursera’s financial aid or a free trial applies before you pay.
Free and discounted vouchers for paid exams
Vouchers make a real certification free or cheap. They’re the best deal on this page when you can get one, but they’re time-limited and sometimes restricted to certain regions or work emails.
How they usually work
- Event challenges: Microsoft and AWS run skills challenges where completing a learning path earns a free or 50% voucher. Microsoft’s AI Skills Fest in June 2026 offered a 100% voucher, and AWS’s AIF2CLOUD code took 50% off the AI Practitioner. Both are reported closed.
- Databricks Learning Festivals: these have run roughly every quarter in 2026. In each, completing a learning pathway within the window earned a 50% certification voucher. Community posts report that some participants waited a long time for codes, so finish early and keep your completion screenshot.
- Corporate programs: Google’s GEAR program has offered certification vouchers to people with corporate email addresses. The September 2026 round has passed.
- Beta exams: these aren’t free, but they’re steeply discounted. AWS’s ML Engineer – Associate C02 beta is $75 instead of $150, and the AI Business Strategist beta is $50 instead of $100. You wait longer for results, and the exam can be rougher.
Promotions change monthly. Check vouchers before you book anything.
Other ways to cut the cost
- Free renewals: Microsoft role-based certs like AI-103 renew through a free online assessment each year, so you only ever pay once.
- Free official practice: Microsoft Learn offers free practice assessments for its exams (now through AI Skills Navigator for AI-103), and AWS Skill Builder has free official practice question sets.
- Employer reimbursement: many employers will pay for a cert tied to your job. Ask before you pay yourself.
Use the cost calculator to compare total cost over the life of a cert, including renewals.
Our honest ranking of free options
If you only have time for a few, here is the order we’d take them in, by usefulness to a job search:
| Rank | Option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Discounted voucher for a cert you’d buy anyway | Full value of a paid cert at a fraction of the price |
| 2 | CS50 AI | Hard projects you can show, and a known name |
| 3 | Hugging Face Agents Course | Agent skills employers test, with a final project |
| 4 | Anthropic Academy | The best free Claude and MCP training |
| 5 | Oracle AI Foundations | A real proctored line for your resume at zero cost |
| 6 | Oracle Agentic AI Foundations | A proctored credential with agent keywords |
| 7 | Kaggle Learn | Fast, hands-on basics |
| 8 | OpenAI and Databricks badges | Nice to have, minimal signal |
Who should skip the free route
If your employer pays for training, don’t spend weeks collecting free badges. Take the paid exam that matches your job, such as AI-103 or the AWS AI Practitioner, and use the free courses only as prep. Free credentials matter most when you’re paying out of pocket, switching careers, or need to show baseline AI literacy quickly.

FAQ
Is there a free AI certification that employers respect?
Not many. The free Oracle Foundations exams are proctored and legitimate, but few job postings ask for them. The strongest free signal is a completed, hard project course like CS50 AI with your code on GitHub. For respected credentials at low cost, look for a voucher for AWS, Microsoft or Google exams.
Are Anthropic and OpenAI certificates real certifications?
Anthropic Academy and OpenAI Academy certificates are free completion certificates or badges, not proctored certifications. Anthropic’s proctored Claude Certified exams exist but are limited to Claude Partner Network organizations. OpenAI says its Academy badges are not certifications.
Can I put a course certificate on LinkedIn?
Yes. Add it under Licenses & certifications, and be accurate in the description (for example, “course certificate”). Recruiters notice when a course is presented as a proctored certification.
How do I find free exam vouchers?
Watch vendor events (Microsoft skills challenges, AWS promotions, Databricks Learning Festivals), check whether your employer has a partner or training program, and check our vouchers page, which we update as offers open and close.
